ASEAN joined hands at the 12th Coordinating Conference on the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (The 12th SOC-COM)

              During 15-16 May 2017, Thailand, in the capacity of the current Chair of the ASEAN Senior Officials on Drug Matters (ASOD) was invited by ASEAN Secretariat to attend the 12th Coordinating Conference on the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (12th SOC-COM). Mr. Pipop Chamnivikaipong, Deputy-Secretary-General, NCB led the delegation comprising Ms.Rachanikorn Sarasiri, Advisor to ONCB and Ms.Sasikanya Jarupoonphon from Foreign Affairs Bureau, to attend the 12th Coordinating Conference on the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (12th SOC-COM). The meeting was held at the ASEAN Hall, ASEAN Secretariat, Jakarta, Indonesia. H.E. Mr. Vongthep Arthakaivalvatee, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community presided over the opening ceremony and chaired the meeting.

               The 12th SOC-COM discussed the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC)-based initiative to promote the ‘Culture of Prevention’ which features five components, namely, (1) preventing violent extremism, (2) preventing violence against women and children, (3) preventing crime and offending, (4) preventing drug use and trafficking, and (5) promoting culture of peace, human rights and lawfulness.

               The objectives of the meeting also included the followings:

              - Share updates and exchange views on the progress of implementation of the ASCC Blueprint 2025;

              - Share updates on cross-sectoral initiatives and discuss ways forward to address cross-cutting and community building issues; and

              - Promote 2017 ASEAN Priorities under the Philippine Chairmanship and ASEAN 50th Anniversary major activities and milestones particularly under the ASCC.

              The Meeting featured 2 workshops. One is the Development of ASCC Blueprint 2025 Monitoring and Evaluation Framework and the Finalisation of ASCC Results Framework KPIs and another one is the discussion on the Culture of Prevention which is divided into 3 groups. On behalf of the ASOD, Mr. Pipop Chamnivikaipong will chair a workshop group on preventing drug use and trafficking.
