SODC of Viet Nam hosted the 38th ASEAN Senior Officials on Drug Matters (ASOD)


                The 38th ASEAN Senior Officials on Drug Matters was held on 24-25 July 2017 in Hanoi, hosted by the Standing Office on Drug and Crime (SODC) of Viet Nam. The meeting was attended by delegations of senior officials from 10 ASEAN Member States and ASEAN Secretariat. The opening of the meeting was presided over by H.E. Pol. Senior Lt. General Le Quy Vuong, Deputy Minister of Ministry of Public Security and prior to the opening ceremony, Heads of delegations and Deputy Secretary-General of the ASEAN Secretariat had a courtesy call to H.E. Deputy Minister of Ministry of Public Security. Mr. Sirinya Sitdhichai, Secretary-General of the Narcotics Control Board and head of Thai delegation, in the capacity of previous Chair of the 37th ASOD Meeting, tranferred the chairmanship to Pol. Lt. General Do Kim Tuyen, Deputy Director-General of Police, Ministry of Public Security and head of Viet Nam delegation to chair the 38th ASOD Meeting. The meeting shared information on drug situation of each ASEAN Member States and progress made on the implementation of ASEAN Work Plan on Securing Communities Against Illicit Drugs 2016-2025. The progress report on ASOD Projects were presented to the meeting. The reports on the ASEAN Drug Monitoring Network (ADMN) ASEAN Airport Interdiction Task Force, ASEAN Seaport Interdiction Task Force were presented to the meeting. The meeting endorsed the ASEAN Cooperation Plan to Tackle Illicit Drugs Production and Trafficking in the Golden Triangle 2017-2019. The meeting met in 5 working groups, namely Preventive Drug Education chaired by the Philippines, Treatment and Rehabilitation chaired by Malaysia, Drug Law Enforcement chaired by Thailand, Research chaired by Singapore, Alternative Development chaired by the Philippines. Brunei Darussalam offered to be the host of the 39th ASOD Meeting in 2018. Sideline to the press conference of the 38th ASOD Meeting, the SODC of Viet Nam organized the launch of the second Report of ASEAN Drug Monitoring Network of 2016 which also contributes to the celebration of 50th Anniversary of ASEAN that falls on 8 August 2017. The ADMN Report presented drug situation in ASEAN and warning sign of emerging trend of drug problem as well as drug control policy of ASEAN Member States.

                Moreover, on 27 July 2017, the meetings between ASOD and Dialogue Partners were organized, namely with the Plus Three as the SOMTC+3 Working Group on Narcotics, the coordination meetings between ASOD and China, ASOD and Japan, ASOD and ROK, ASOD and India, ASOD and Russia.

               The meeting concluded with ASEAN solidarity and spirit of cooperation.
