ACM Prajin Juntong, Dep PM cum Justice Minister visited Myanmar to boost Thailand-Myanmar Drug Control.
On 21 May 2018 at 10.00 hrs., H.E. Air Chief Marshal Prajin Juntong, Deputy Prime Minister cum Minister of Justice together paid a courtesy call on H.E. Lieutenant General Kyaw Swe, Minister of Home Affairs at Naypyidaw city,the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. The high level meeting aimed to promote drug control cooperation between the two countries.
H.E. ACM Prajin Juntong expressed his appreciation to Myanmar Government for its excellent and continued cooperation in the fight against drugs. The Thai Dep PM reiterated the current policy of the Royal Thai Government of General Prayut Chan-o-cha, Prime Minister of Thailand that paid high attention to promote and enhance cooperation with Myanma. On this occasion, He also requested Myanmar to intensify the operation in the areas of illicit drug production and against precursor and chemical smuggling to drug production sites in the Golden Triangle in line with the Golden Triangle operation plan and the Safe Mekong Coordination Project. Furthermore, The Thai side also encouraged the Myanmar side to consider supporting the Joint Action Plan on Drug Control along Thailand-Myanmar Border which is viewed as a mutual comprehensive framework highlighting not only drug law enforcement, but also treatment and rehabilitation, prevention and sustainable alternative development.The Thai Government expressed its willingness to support the implementation in accordance with all Thailand-Myanmar cooperation mechanisms, including the bilateral meeting, Border Liaison Officer-BLO and drug-free border villages, for example. The Thai side pledged to support both in kind and in cash, training and capacity-building for Myanmar. In addition, the Thai side also agreed to the initiative proposed by the Myanmar side to expand their cooperation to embrace all security issues, especially, onThailand-Myanmar border, the hosting of regular high-level ministerial meetings of both countries, and the hosting of a meeting on precursor and chemical control among four concerned countries such as Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and China in order to formulate effective procedures in precursor and chemical control.
The meeting concluded with appreciation to the Thai side's committed efforts and strong support to enhance Thailand-Myanmar drug control cooperation and also approval to the Joint Action Plan from the Myanmar side. Besides, H.E.Lt. Gen. Kyaw Swe reassured H.E.ACM Prajin that Myanmar will try its best to accelerate negotiation and peace process with ethnic groups by that it is believed to contribute very much to success in drug control efforts of both countries. Myanmar pledges support to the proposals and iniatives made by Thailand in order to jointly address drug problem and reduce its impacts effectively for our socities safe from drugs in the nearest future.
